Getting to The Root of the matter

The more I read The Root, the Washington Post’s new online magazine for African Americans, the more I like it.

Exhibit A: Of the many op/eds and blog posts offering President Obama advice on what to say during his first speech to a joint session of Congress tonight, none are as insightful as Terence Samuel’s essay at The Root, in which he says the president should give it to us straight.

There are those who say that confidence in Obama is the only thing we have going for us, but that does not mean we should get just another inspirational speech. He needs to be very specific about how the mountain of taxpayer money that he has recently pumped into the economy will jolt it out of its vegetative state and get it moving again. He needs to correct the impression left last week by his treasury secretary that they don’t know what they were doing.

You’ll recall that I blogged last week about The Root’s provocative essay comparing Attorney General Eric Holder’s “race speech” to Obama’s famed “A More Perfect Union” address from March 2008.

Let’s hope The Root keeps up the good work.
